The famous Besses o' th' Barn Band first won the British Open title in 1892 under the baton of the legendary Alex Owen and went on to add seven wins in total. Based in Whitefield, Manchester, they still practise in the premises they used over 100 years ago. The audience will be pleased to see Besses in their new uniforms this year. These had their first appearance at Cambridge in May 2003. The band appear this year for the first time at the Open under the baton of Steve Sykes, who conducted the band at the Regional Championships and at the All England Masters in Cambridge. On principal cornet Besses are please to have Merete Vollan, a young lady from Norway who has just qualified at Salford with a First Class Honours Degree and is staying in England to do her Masters Degree. They have one or two new signings for this year's Open - Tom Emery (solo euphonium), and three percussionists, Joss Robinson, Michael Edge and Danny Hayes. Last year was a very successful one for Besses. In March 2002 they qualified for the National finals in the Royal Albert Hall and in May 2002 they qualified from the Grand Shield to return to the British Open today.
