ON THE SQUARE

Royal Marines School of Music, Deal
Conductor: Major Paul Neville

Compact Disc £12.00

The Eastney Collection is committed to reviving the excellent recordings by the Royal Marines Bands from the 1950s, 60s and now the 70s. Previous recordings have featured LPs from Sir F Vivian Dunn and now the recordings from Major (soon to be Lt Col Principal Director of Music) Paul Neville.

These are all fantastic quality recordings from EMI made in their Nº 1 Studios with the renown Brian Culverhouse as the producer. Brian, who worked at EMI from 1952 to 1972 says:

“After the retirement in 1968 of Lieutenant Colonel F Vivian Dunn, knighted KCVO by HM The Queen in 1969, both I and the Company (EMI), wished to continue the association with the Royal Marines Band Service. I approached the new Principal Director of Music, Major Paul Neville, with a view to doing that and he was delighted to agree to undertake further recordings.

“As previously with Vivian, I spent a day at the Royal Marines School of Music, Deal, listening to and timing a great deal of music, and afterwards considering what the programmes should be. I also commissioned new marches and arrangements from Gordon Langford and Ernest Tomlinson who were pre-eminent in the light orchestral field, giving the programmes a more contemporary flavour. These recordings were welcomed by critics and public alike.”

The inlay is particularly comprehensive and has many interesting with many photos. The playing is superb.
