The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was conceived in its present form and first performed in 1950. Today, with its unique blend of music, ceremony, entertainment, and theatre, set against the amazing backdrop of Edinburgh Castle is without question one of the world’s greatest shows. A cornucopia of international talent including, for the first time, military and civilian performance from Chile and China, helped bring down the final curtain on 12 years of Brigadier James Jamison’s time as the Edinburgh Tattoo’s Chief Executive and producer, at this year’s 57th showpiece military event. With over 1000 performers featuring a Ugandan orphan choir, South American National Ballet Company artistes, 80 Nepalese musicians and the new Royal Regiment of Scotland, the show embraced a magical mix of pizzazz and humour, together with all the ceremonial pomp and splendour for which the tattoo is globally recognized. Along with the largest gathering of pipes and drums ever The to grace the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle were two of the finest military bands in the world, the Regimental Bands of the Scots Guards and the Coldstream Guards. While from overseas, the ever-popular New Zealand Army Band, Switzerland’s Top Secret Drum Corps and a talented group of young South African highland dancers, also contributed to the popular 90-minute production. Combined with sophisticated twenty first century projection technology to help tell the story of 370 years of Scotland’s soldiery as well as award-winning music from Disney’s worldwide phenomenon the Lion King, the 2006 extravaganza offered a unique and memorable spectacle of music, ceremony, and entertainment. 1.
