In the mid 1980s the then pd, Lt Col Graham Hoskins produced three LPs for EMI featuring the marches of Sousa titled Stars and Stripes Forever, Hands Across the Sea and Solid Men to the Front. These very popular LPs sold extremely well for many years until the market for those black plastic discs ceased and gave way to the compact disc. What made those recordings different from other Sousa recordings was because Graham had access to the historic Sousa library and was thus able to recreate the sounds that Sousa originally intended.

Graham remarks in the inlay that Sousa’s “music was often not meant to be performed ‘on the march’ but more often for concert stage performance and the items were written for specific occasions and at the behest of benefactors.”

Thus in Manhattan Beach one can hear the wavelets rippling on the seashore whilst a band approaches, passes and disappears into the distance and in Liberty Bell the sound of the bell is a noticeable feature — one reason for it being played so regularly on Classic Fm.

Here in volume one we have twenty three of the tracks from those original three LPs which form a taster for volume two to be soon released .
