A long-awaited release of the music of Gustav Holst and the two suites for military band plus the Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite |
|
The Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth under the direction of the Principal Director of Music Lt Col Nick Grace RM and the Chichester Cathedral Choir directed by Sarah Baldock perform some of Holst’s greatest compositions. Recorded in Chichester Cathedral during October 2009. This recording is a representation of the concert performed in Chichester Cathedral on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Holst's death, during which a new memorial to him, called Music of the Spheres, was unveiled. New arrangements of Turn Back, O Man and Te Deum in B flat are also premièred on this superb recording. When played on BBC Radio 3 the presenter commented “What a fantastic sound”. A must for all Royal Marines Bands and Holst fans' collection. Military band enthusiasts will welcome this well overdue new recording of Holst’s two suites and the Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite plus the fabulous sound of the Chichester Cathedral Choir with band arrangements of Stanford and Parry. The recording of Hammersmith alone makes the purchase of this CD worthwhile. This major work has been rarely recorded and is a very welcome addition to our catalogue. The only criticism is that the tracks have not been registered with Gracenote so therefore will not display when played on a computer, but this is easily rectified. The inlay is comprehensive with much information about all aspects of the CD. Playing time: 71 minutes 03 seconds |
