THE GURKHA FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 2008 The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas massed with The Old Comrades Conductors: Major Wayne Hopla (Gurkhas), Phil Hughes (Old Comrades) and David Cole (guest)
DVD — £14.00
Each year the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas presents a two-day concert in the Duke of York’s Military School, Dover. A different guest band/choir is selected to mass with them. In 2008 The Old Comrades band was chosen. This band consists of a standard military band made up of former Royal Marines musicians who still reside in and around the town of Deal, the former home of the Royal Marines before they left for Portsmouth in 1996. The Old Comrades band was the inception of the owner of this web site, Stephen Misson, in 2005 and performs just once a year on the Deal Memorial Bandstand where they attract a massive audience of some 2500 people partly because of their method of performing — no rehearsals whatsoever! The Gurkha Festival is normally a sell-out performance; with the inclusion of The Old Comrades, this was guaranteed. With only one short rehearsal the concert was a huge success as is evident on this DVD. Both bands enjoyed this unique experience immensely — unique because this, unlike the original idea of the Old Comrades, will never happen again. Guest conductor on the Friday night (the night of this recording) was Captain David Cole who took the band through his arrangement of The Final Countdown. The programme also included solo items by soprano Margaret Threadgold and a special guest interlude by the Corps of Drums from the Band of HM Royal Marines, Commando Training Centre, Lympstone. A CD is now available here. |
